Presentation
Mahjoub Ben Bella, born in 1946 in Maghnia, Algeria, is a prominent artist known for his innovative approach to abstract art and his unique fusion of Arabic calligraphy with contemporary techniques. After studying at the Oran Art School in Algeria, Ben Bella moved to France to further his education, attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, the Decorative Arts School in Paris, and ultimately completing his studies at Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 2024, Ben Bella's legacy was honored in the retrospective exhibition "Lumière d'or" at the Lilia Ben Salah Gallery in Paris, showcasing a selection of his works from the later years of his career. The exhibition, which ran from April 3 to May 18, 2024, celebrated the evolution of his artistic journey and his exploration of the relationship between signs and abstraction.
His artistic legacy continues to be celebrated through posthumous exhibitions, and his influence remains evident in the contemporary art scene.
Between 1969 and 1976, Ben Bella actively participated in the events, debates, and meetings at the prestigious Atelier de la Monnaie. From 1978 to 1980, he taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Cambrai, where he helped shape the next generation of artists.
Known for his vibrant contribution to urban life, Mahjoub Ben Bella played a significant role in transforming public spaces in Northern France. His remarkable works include painting 12 kilometers of cobblestones in the Paris-Roubaix area, brightening up the "horrible Paris-Roubaix," and covering 400 square meters of facades in Lille. Ben Bella’s ability to intervene and energize public spaces with color and life is one of his most defining qualities.
Through his journey of exile, Ben Bella embraced the influence of both his North African heritage and Western art traditions, blending these elements to create his own unique artistic language. His work, which transcends the boundaries of traditional Arabic calligraphy, offers a fresh take on painting. Each canvas represents a new adventure, an exploration of space where the artist reinvents the medium.
Since the 1970s, Mahjoub Ben Bella has exhibited his work globally, with solo exhibitions in France, Europe, Canada, the US, England, Kuwait, Russia, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, and Morocco, among others. His contributions to the art world continue to resonate, making him an influential figure in contemporary art.
