The dragonfly is a familiar and positive symbol in Japan, much more so than in France. The country was once even called "akitsushima", the dragonfly island, in reference to the shape of the main island of the archipelago, Honshu. This name is said to have been given by Emperor Jimmu who, from the top of a peak, noticed that the island looked like dragonflies mating. (extract from a text by Matthieu Séguéla, curator of the Libella exhibition in 2019).

It is an emblematic sculpture of the artistic and historical exhibition "Libella", which gives it a poetic dimension.

Presentation

Trained in textile art and design in Tokyo and Helsinki, then in sculpture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Nao Kaneko quickly uses plaster in her creations. Plaster gives her great freedom and allows her to free herself from the technical constraints of weaving that she practiced in Japan.

Winner of the Paul-Louis Weiller competition at the Academy of Fine Arts, her first personal exhibition of sculptures in Tokyo in 1990 made her plaster work known in Japan.

Since 1995, Nao Kaneko, to give more expression to the material, adds plaster to his painting and thus gives it a sculptural touch.

“Water, blue" is the title of several exhibitions by the artist from 2000 to 2003 at the Galerie Anne Paulin in Nîmes, at the Galerie Futura in Paris and during the water symposium in Cannes. Several exhibitions in France and other European countries, in the Americas, in Asia and in Japan punctuate the career of the artist.

Her unique use of plaster in painting was rewarded in 2004, at the Salon du Blanc in Tokyo, where she won the Honor Prize. In 2014, she exhibited at the Clemenceau Museum in Paris where she is expected again in 2016 alongside her exhibition as part of the Normandy Impressionist Festival, "Monet Clemenceau, l'Horizon Infini, peinture de Nao Kaneko" in Rouen.

Committed since its beginnings to the idea of preserving the planet, its favorite themes, water, air, the elements are now finding a powerful echo in our societies.
