Artwork location: Spain

In the Water is a series of sculptures that examines an incongruity between petroleum-based products and water. The designs were created using traditional Chinese papercutting techniques that pre-date the invention of modern pulp strained paper in 105 CE. Each motif depicts a ripple of moving water. The papercuts were then scanned and traced using a computer.

The files were cut into acrylic using computer numerical control (CNC) cutting. The acrylic cutouts were then heated and hand shaped. The artworks respond to the history of the site as a form hospital for Our Lady of Mercy. The plastic water is an allegory for the spiritual artifice that has become inextricable from secular societies.
