Work from the “Windows of Utopia" period (1997-1999)
At the dawn of the third millennium, I wanted to synthesize my different approaches to art. Having tasted surrealism, abstraction and contemporary research, I concretized these into one.
This new orientation did not present itself as land to be cleared but rather as a break in the form of analysis of the path that I had traveled in thirty-seven years of activity. At fifty-six years old, I still felt as much ardor and enthusiasm in my workshop. My inspiration was present and flawless. However, this suspension of my brush seemed desirable to me before turning it towards other explorations. I realized that the use of my dreams in my painting would one day have less interest and an end.
By touching on “Windows of Utopia", far from working with ease, I discovered the complexity of this theme and its technical realization. Indeed, the rigor of the construction opposed the strangeness of the subjects.
On a rigid surface, I exploited hollow volumes, cut out in the plywood. I introduced structures in relief as well as windows opening and closing at will on my anticipations brought to life. The sculptor in me was no longer opposed to the painter. Both had succeeded, in the same communion, in creating a painting-sculpture.
Having mastered this duality, I could return to my old demons, namely the backstage of dreams. During my first imaginary journeys, dreams served me to situate man in relation to the universe and his attempts at deciphering it. On my new canvases, the interrogative and mystical character disappeared, giving way to the aspirations and fantasies of the individual. The latter developed there with as much clarity as possible. However, I raised them to the paroxysm by using, in their reproduction, all the available niches of freedom, audacity and anarchy.
It didn't matter that the facets of our secret personalities came to light in the light of the painting. Stripped of his Cartesian mind, the spectator could pass through the mirror of another existence. Playing with the border of the unconscious, my figurative representations became unreal creations which aspired to a poetic penetration of everyday life.
To my dreamlike journeys, I added effects tending to distort the judgment and deceive the perception of the spectator (a stick which he believed to be broken in the water), optical illusions (parallel lines which appeared curved to him) as well as than perspective (his eye perceived two different sizes even though they were the same).
Of this period, Roger Curtis probably best defined its contours: By creating Windows of Utopia, Gilbert Sabatier once again opened up other unexplored fields; attempts to penetrate a universe hermetic to ordinary mortals. Through his gradual return to figuration, the artist, through the subtle play of abstraction and figuration, penetrates into the ethereal spheres, these hypothetical fluids of all our anxieties, our delusions, our waking dreams where the confrontation between tactile realities and anticipated certainties open new horizons like the stars “windows to the world". Sabatier is perhaps, through his vision of the universe, a creator who tried to combine the square and the circle (earth and universe) in a symbiosis of unity.

Gilbert Sabatier is a painter, engraver, sculptor. A creator since 1960, he is the author of 20 periods ranging from figurative to contemporary research. His entire work represents two thousand paintings, 800 sculptures and 250 engravings.
His work is a hypnotizing and protean universe that questions the art of our time in all its forms, colors and movements. Explorer of the impossible, alchemist of matter and adventurer of art, Sabatier has never ceased to create in complete freedom paintings, engravings, serigraphs and sculptures sometimes monumental, sometimes light.
From his early figurative works to his research on weightlessness and suspended time, from his paintings between dreams and reality to his quest for abstraction, from his fascination with the laws of the universe to the invention of a new genre, a synthesis of all his obsessions, the artist reveals himself like never before.
Throughout his life, he tried to artistically express the aspirations and doubts of human beings facing an undeciphered universe. Those who discover his work will immerse themselves in the heart and mind of a resolutely free artist.
