Artwork location: France

This black and white masterpiece captured by a renowned photographer immediately catches the eye with its dark and enigmatic atmosphere. The central subject of this work is a character lying on a dilapidated sofa, with barely visible floral patterns, but revealing a certain nostalgia. The protagonist, dressed in sportswear, lies nonchalantly, offering a poignant image of vulnerability and abandonment. The background of the setting is of a rough texture, perhaps a degraded wall, which reinforces the idea of a forgotten or abandoned space. Numbered labels "2.4" and "3.6" are affixed to the wall, adding a dimension of mystery. These elements push the viewer to question the meaning of these numbers and the context of this scene. The composition plays brilliantly with contrasts, highlighting the subject while subtly integrating it into the shadow of its surroundings. The photographer uses black and white to accentuate emotions, stripping the scene of colorful distractions and focusing on textures, shadows, and light. The contrast of elements—the old-fashioned nature of the couch, the character’s relaxed but elusive posture, and the oppressive atmosphere of the setting—creates a palpable tension. This is a tribute to the art of storytelling through a frozen image, where every detail, from body language to surrounding objects, contributes to a rich and complex narrative. In short, this photograph is a powerful and captivating work, where every detail is carefully orchestrated to evoke a range of emotions ranging from nostalgia to contemplation to intrigue. The photographer’s talent lies in his ability to capture and transcend the everyday, giving it an almost lyrical depth.

Presentation

French photographer Julie Peiffer, born in 1967, lives and works between Paris and Nancy.

Julie Peiffer is a self-taught artist who began her artistic career in 2020. After years of keen observation of society, she found in photography a powerful means to explore social issues that concern her, shedding light on inequalities, particularly those affecting women. She strives to capture the immateriality of feelings and make them visible through her art.

After working as an editor in magazine journalism in Paris, Julie Peiffer turned to photography following the 2015 attacks, driven by an urgent need to capture the city during those dark times.

Since then, Julie Peiffer’s work has delved into feminine identity, exploring the depths of this intimate and often unknown realm.

Her photographs harmoniously blend the language of the female body with light, revealing an underlying vitality and melancholy—core elements of human existence.

She constantly explores the materiality of the image, creating photographs that transcend mere visuals to become almost pictorial, offering a unique sensory experience.

In 2023, one of her works was included in the HERMÈS Foundation collection, and she joined the masterclass of photographer FLORE.

Her works are also present in private collections in France, Canada, Dubai, and Australia.

In 2024, one of her works will be part of the Artcurial sale for the Foch Foundation.
