The piece is based on Australian super-model Emma Champdaloup who really has those planar features, soaring cheekbones and intense gaze. I saw in the piece an archetypal female power, and created the dynamic twisting hair structures to give form to the energy I was seeking. Emma 2024 reflects my long-time focus to affirm and model people who are free and clear, unbowed, comfortable in their own skins. Sculpting the bust, bringing these beings to life in clay is a lot of fun. Yet this type of careful, skill-based realism can sometimes seem out of step with current artistic trends. Nonetheless, I'm convinced that the classical sculpted bust can still endure as a viable contemporary art form, which I aim to do by staying open to the new and unexpected and incorporating that in my process.
I sculpted the new Emma, 2024 in my studio in Rye, NY using recycled clay which I've kept moist and been re-using for 15 years. My moldmaker and I made a complex rubber mold of the original with about 20 separate pieces to it. For this new version we have cast the sculpture in three materials: bonded marble, bonded aluminum and bonded bronze. In this process the materials are ground into a powder, blended with a pourable resin and worked into each part of the rubber mold, then re-assembled around an armature into the finished piece, an exact replica of the original clay, now in these more durable and visually interesting materials.
Bob Clyatt is a conceptual sculptor based in Rye, NY, known for blending ancient and contemporary themes in figurative sculptures using materials like stoneware, porcelain, and 3D printing. He studied art at UC Berkeley and later trained under Barney Hodes at the Art Students League of New York. His work often explores the interplay between organic and technological elements.
