Artwork location: Netherlands
This bronze sculpture depicts a diver in an underwater moment of discovery, captured at the instant he encounters a shell on the seabed. The inverted posture of the figure suggests weightlessness and immersion, evoking the quiet, suspended atmosphere beneath the surface of the water.
The diver's focused gesture and the careful interaction with the shell emphasize curiosity, attention and the intimacy of exploration. Subtle variations in the bronze surface enhance the tactile quality of the work, reflecting light like shifting currents. More than a narrative scene, the sculpture becomes a meditation on discovery, stillness and the human impulse to search — a moment where movement pauses and observation takes over.
Presentation
Jan-Willem van Oldeneel (born 1957, Nijmegen) is a Dutch sculptor living and working in Laren, the Netherlands. Trained as an industrial designer and business economist, he combines technical precision with a strong sense of form and narrative. Van Oldeneel creates both commissioned and autonomous work, ranging from sculpted portraits of people and animals to full figures, reliefs and group compositions in ceramic and bronze.
In addition to his sculptural practice, he designs artworks for commemorative and ceremonial occasions, including monuments, medals and objects for ecclesiastical use. He works with a wide range of materials such as bronze, cast aluminium, iron, glass, wood and natural stone, often combining different materials within a single work. His practice is rooted in craftsmanship, symbolism and a thoughtful engagement with memory, place and human presence.
