This striking work depicts two dogs in an interior of warm, enveloping tones. The deep red background lends a rich and theatrical atmosphere to the scene, emphasizing the nobility of the subjects. These two dogs, carefully detailed, display a mixture of elegance and nonchalance. The first dog, with its curly, silky coat, appears serenely reclining, its eyes revealing a gentle tranquility. The second dog, slightly further back, displays an alert and attentive posture, wearing a feather on its head, adding a touch of extravagance to the composition. Around the dogs, various objects are scattered, testifying to a mixture of luxury and everyday life. An open box reveals scattered papers, suggesting a story or an interrupted activity. A blue fabric, draped over an item of furniture, contrasts admirably with the red background, accentuating the nuances of color in the scene. The artist excels in the representation of textures – the fur of the dogs, the softness of the fabric, and the coldness of the metal of the box – all are depicted with remarkable precision. This work, through its composition and execution, captivates and invites contemplation, leaving the viewer to wonder about the story hidden behind this seemingly simple scene but rich in subtle details.

His grandfather Frans was a decorative painter and his father, also called Charles, was a successful landscape painter in the 17th century Dutch style.
He was first a pupil of his father and then of Joseph Stevens, a realist painter of animals, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Later, he also studied at the Academy of Louvain. From 1881 he exhibited regularly at the Salons of Brussels, Liège, Ghent, Antwerp, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. He painted several paintings for Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium.
