Artwork location: France

This black and white photograph captures a scene imbued with an intimate and humble atmosphere, a true homage to the behind the scenes of artistic creation. At the center of the image sits a simple and sturdy wooden chair. The texture of the wood, accentuated by the shades of gray, bears witness to the passage of time and the many hours spent in contemplation and creation. On the seat of the chair, a collection of painting tools is offered to our gaze. Brushes, of different sizes and thicknesses, are carefully arranged, their arrangement reinforcing the idea of a methodical order present in the apparent chaos of the studio. The paint pots, somewhat chipped, tell of the fatigue of constant and devoted use. One of these pots seems soaked in paint, ready to be used again, while the others seem frozen in a pause, awaiting the artist's return. The crumpled rags and canvases, partially covering the seat of the chair, add an intriguing textural dimension. They awaken the viewer’s imagination, suggesting the countless trials and errors that mark the path to the finished work. This minimalist staging, sublimated by the soft light filtering through an off-screen window, creates a play of light and shadow that envelops the scene in a touch of melancholy and modesty. The background of the image, revealed by a studio element in the background, remains blurred, thus accentuating the importance of the objects located in the foreground. It is an invitation to delve into the intimacy of the creative process, to feel the productive solitude and the tranquility of the artist’s sanctuary. This work does not simply represent objects; it captures the very essence of the hard work, patience, and passion that drive Picasso in the perpetual search for perfect expression. In short, this photograph is distinguished by its ability to evoke the particular atmosphere of the studio, offering a privileged glimpse into the discreet but intensely alive daily life of the one who creates. It is a heartfelt and poignant tribute to the beauty of the artistic process, where every tool, every texture, and every shadow plays a crucial role in the silent dance of creation.

Presentation

Photographer and plastic artist born in 1930 near Belfort and died in 2016 in the Var, André Villers started photography in 1952 thanks to Pierre Astoux, a teacher, during his stay at the Vallauris sanatorium following bone tuberculosis. It was in 1953 that he met Pablo Picasso who gave him his first camera. Following this meeting, André Villers produced many portraits of Picasso but also a joint work. He produced portraits of artists such as: Alexander Calder, Pierre Soulages, Salvador Dali, César, Tapies ... In 1970, he began to experiment with other techniques for his photographs such as the creation of his negatives from layers, cutting. The collections of his works are in the Nicéphore-Niépce Museum.
