I have worked a lot with Carla Bruni since she was 17 on more than 40 photo shoots.
These photos, taken between 1990 and 1992, reflect the beginning of an era, the era of the Top Model, this period when models became stars. Before that, clothes were the stars of fashion photo shoots. We used the mannequins as “hangers” to put the clothes on and show them off. But a new generation of models arrived, superb but also hardworking, ambitious. They had the desire to be recognized for their work. Some of them worked for hours in shoes that were too small and didn't say a word. Carla was one of those role models. For this photo shoot, she sat half-sitting on the floor, naked, for over an hour, without complaint. She wanted to show that she was more than a model but that she had a soul and something more to give, with her eyes, with the expressions on her face, like an actress. This is how these girls (Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer...) became famous and recognized. From there was born a new form of art photography, which magnified the models and not just the clothes. The goal of this session was to take timeless photos to compare to pure fashion photos where the clothes would become obsolete at some point and so would the images. These photos are more portraits of women than a fashion photo shoot. Carla Bruni worked very hard on this session. The barely there clothes made him feel free.

Presentation

Philippe Robert is a French photographer with a degree from the Institute of Advanced Cinematographic Studies. After graduating, he flew to Los Angeles, where he studied cinematography at UCLA. Once his studies were completed, he spent his time working on several popular television shows in Paris and Los Angeles, where, while working for "Les Cahiers du Cinéma," he met people like Tom Waits, Robert Mitchum, Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Nicholson, and André Kertesz. During this time, he began his career as a photographer for SPIN magazine and confirmed his talent with numerous magazines such as L.A Weekly, Interview Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, Time Magazine, Elle, Match, Art Magazine, Ritz, Sans-Nom, Glamour, Holland's diep... His first cover for Harper Bazaar was the last issue in the Guy Bourdin series.

He is accustomed to working with the world's most prestigious brands and top models like Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (First Lady of France), and recently Marine Watch for Chanel and Nora Arnezeder for Guerlain. He describes this period as the beginning of an era, the era of supermodels, where they established themselves as familiar names, and global recognition was associated with their modeling careers. He also worked on a successful photographic project with the National Opera of Paris, where he photographed the star dancer ("Les Etoiles de Paris"). It was the first time the Opera allowed a photographer to shoot its stars in the studio. This series was published and exhibited everywhere, including in Slyle magazine in France. He collaborates with music labels like BMG, Warner, EastWest, and advertising companies like Publicis & nous, CLM, BBDO, and RSCG but also works for many film production companies as a director. His work has been exhibited internationally through:

The Fashion Photo Festival at the Louvre Museum in Paris with Virgin-Les Visionnaires,

The exhibition at the Picasso Museum-Cannes La Croisette Film Festival-NYPD-New York "Portraiture" (Contour-Getty/Martin Parr),

The Fashion Photo Festival at Hotel de Paris, Monte-Carlo,

Art Photo Expo Gallery, Miami, and New York from 2008 to 2010.

It will be exhibited in the upcoming 10th-anniversary exhibition of the Fashion Photo Festival in Cannes in June, July, and August 2012.
