Lars Beusker was looking for a picture that shows a mighty herd of elephants. Of course, you can see them in large numbers inside the park, but then very scattered while grazing and often high bushes also disturb the picture. Outside the park is probably the most beautiful place to photograph elephants: in a dried up lake bed at the foot of the Kilimanjaro.
Unfortunately, the so-called "crossings" - the crossing of this unvegetated area by elephants - have become very rare, because due to the advancing climate change, there has been enough fresh grass everywhere for years, so that the need for this long march for the animals is no longer given. And still I was given this great luck:
I got out of the car and lay down flat on my stomach in the lake bed - a herd of elephants several hundred meters away was heading my way. My tension was rising - would they get close enough for me to capture the group in full format with my 200mm lens, or would they perhaps disperse or simply change their direction? The mighty animals were still walking in a row, led by the matriarch. I guessed about 20 meters in front of me they stopped. They saw me and decided to stop for a moment, the late afternoon sun was low, a perfect light for me. Slowly the other animals came up beside her on her right and left, curious to see what lay ahead in the middle of the dry plain, the two calves protectively surrounded by the larger ones. That is what elephants do! In every situation that requires it, they surround the small ones, protect them with your own body - a bond of love.

Lars Beusker - Nature Photographer of the Year by IPA in New York.
This year, for the first time ever, Lars participated in international photography competitions with some of his images. With the work “Outlast" as the cover image of a series, he was awarded Nature Photographer of the Year at the renowned International Photography Awards in New York in September 2022 – this prize is considered one of the most coveted awards worldwide and will be presented on October 22 at the Lucie Award Gala in the famous Carnegie Hall New York City.
At the age of 15 he discovered his love for black and white photography.
After studying photography and design he works as a fashion photographer and runs his own design bureau. Since 2013, Beusker has been working on various freelance projects, always in black and white, in addition to his commissioned work.
Fascinated by a first trip to Africa, it is not surprising that wildlife photography captivated him the most. The closeness to wild animals, the tranquility of untouched nature, and the people in these habitats continue to fascinate him – he travels to the wilderness as often as he can, capturing unique moments in black and white, as beautiful as portraits of wild animals have rarely been seen.
Since 2018, this work has become his new trademark.
Unlike other wildlife photographers, Beusker always tries to get the animal's eye contact.
In order to do this, he doesn't use long lenses, but rather tries to get very close to the animal.
"The emotions I feel in the moment of the shot, I want to capture in my pictures as well“.
