Born in 1954, near Lyon, Paul Bergignat is a French painter. He studied at the National Superior School of Applied Arts and Crafts of Paris. Once graduated, his career turned towards architecture in Lyon and then in Montpellier, without ceasing his artistic practice. He left architecture in 2006, to dedicate to painting. He currently lives and works in Cévennes.
Two artistic encounters were very important for the artist. The first one was his dicovery of Turner's work, and the light in his pieces. The second one is the fabulous transparencies of Zao Wu-Ki. Paul Bergignant's landscapes are part of his search for this transparence and light. They are silent, unreal, traversed by evanescent clouds. The time is suspended, the immensity of the skies, a barely raised light in the horizon, lets us caught a glimpse of the trees. He creates an inner work, that he draws from his unconscious. A universe full of hamony and calmness, which in the artist's last works is made with darker colors, and have a gradually tendency towards abstraction.
Paul Bergignant exhibits his work regularly in France since 2006, and more recently in Italy.
