Filipe Branquinho

Filipe Branquinho was born in Maputo in 1977 where he currently lives and works. Branquinho grew up during the civil war in Mozambique, in a lively environment closely linked to the world of journalism and the arts, becoming particularly involved in this field through his contact with some of the biggest names in the Mozambican art scene, such as António Quadros, José Forjaz, Ricardo Rangel, Kok Nam and José Cabral.

He is self-taught, in artistic terms, and studied architecture at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique, and at the State University of Londrina, in Brazil. Branquinho discusses social issues, focusing on the reality of Mozambique, especially the population's ways of life, mythologies and urban dynamics. In its practice, it explores themes such as class difference, culture, politics, collective memory or work. His style combines his architectural affiliation and his familiarity with the “school" of Mozambican photography, fusing genres such as portrait and landscape.

His work documents a changing society, is a survey or an inventory of cities, of architecture, suggests personal stories, documents and draws a map of a contemporary Africa, denying any demand for exoticism. In the commercial area, Branquinho works in documentary, industrial, architectural and interior photography and portrait photography.

He was present at the 58th Biennale di Venezia, 2019, at Mozambique pavilion.
