Bruce Herchenrader was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada in 1949 where he still resides today.  Painting has been a lifelong fascination for him beginning with his earliest renderings on the kitchen walls. He grew up on the outskirts of the city, living in two worlds of wooded forest and urban concrete. Romping through swamps, catching bull frogs, salamanders and playing along the forested riverbanks of the Grand River gave him a rich, deep connection with the earth. His rural and wilderness landscapes that he paints are rooted in that earthy connectiveness but his urban subject matter is a reflection also of that part of his life. As a young student he showed an aptitude for painting but in high school he pursued a variety of other interests.

“I was drawn to the creative process by an inner yearning which I only understood more profoundly when I was painting. The pursuit and process of creating and the sharing of that beauty with others is a rich and rewarding spiritual path."
