
Biography
Known for her probing depictions of the Black-American experience during the 20th century, Elizabeth Catlett was an American sculptor and graphic artist. She was born in Washington D.C. in 1915. Having sought influence from both African and Mexican sources, Catlett incorporates both abstract and figurative forms in her work, often leaning on the Modernist sculptural tradition.
Catlett was educated at Howard University, and subsequently at the University of Iowa. Over the course of her career, she was awarded many recognitions and accolades for her work, including Honorary Doctorates from Pace University and Carnegie Mellon, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center.
