HISTORY OF CASANOVA, THE ADMIRABLE. 25 elements, black margins. 70X84,6cm, 1/25.
This composition is from the series of Magic Squares. The subject is an original deck of playing cards, which would be attributed to a certain Zizi des Batignolles, Paris 17, according to the person who had it in his possession.

In any case, it is indeed a story of Casanova, or of his adventures.

The shots were taken on ektachrome film, with 105 micro-nikkor, freehand. After editing the images, the editing was organized around a central FIRE shape, the flame red color and the distribution of the backgrounds of Venice, organizing a kind of circular movement, going from the bottom to the top to go back up, escaping to the top of the composition, like a fire that is consumed.

The image of a wood fire, with its smoke, remains a kind of imprint that calls for a correspondence with the theme of the Passions, deployed here in reference to Casanova, who gives in "The Story of my Life," an overview of the passions at the time of the French Revolution. Text written between 1789 and 1798, in French, admirable testimony of this aristocratic life and of all Europe, in a kind of lucid and clear inner fire, political and philosophical, loving and romantic. The ignition of the senses, theme present here answers of a passionate and impassioned life, dear photographer, in his correspondences with Dionysus.

To return to the series of Magic Squares:
"What interested me at that time was to take hold of a book, an exhibition, a film, a collection, a comic strip, a universe, objects belonging to a category and to establish a collection of them, punctuated by the montage; a dynamic montage where the game of associations between forms, colors, units of plan, narration, could give the pretext of an exercise "to the hair" of the eye and to present, in a decorative perspective, the essential of what I had retained. An analeptic solution was offered at a moment of the work of associations, defined only by the assembly of the elements which had to draw, to address either an identity playful coherence, or, more complicated, an internal image resulting from the assembly to the composition in order to superimpose a double image, to make it more active from the point of view of the observer; this one, indeed, was never to tire of looking, nor to exhaust itself in front of the play of the images and the appropriate final solution, but in some way, for a playful spirit, to open the possibilities of other assemblies. ..." wrote Pascal Therme in his journal.

Pascal Therme

Pascal Therme

France  • 1964

Following his studies in Letters, in 1988, Pascal Therme was associated for his photography in Parisian fashion, alongside the Couturiers and the most prestigious brands. Throughout this period, he pursued a visual creation based on experiences of deconstruction of the image. These experiments apply to all subjects treated by painting, Nudes, Portraits, Landscapes, Architectures, Interiors.

The object is a renewal of the vision and is based on the experience of David Hockney, The Grand Canyon, on the legacy of Cubism through a certain multi-perspective, on the formal legacy of the New Wave of Cinema. His montages, built by numerous photographs, autonomous, sequenced elements recompose a unit, making Image, wish to escape the unique perspective (camera obscura) and decisive time, founding couple of all photography, in a different approach to what makes an image , photography.

His compositions have used several media such as the Polaroid SX70 and its 35mm, then the ektachrome and the 105mm, the 180mm and are placed under the aegis of the Wisdom of Eros, a concept articulating the plastic artist and the man of letters, of being, in an original, even native writing.

Using the montage of these elements, driven by different guiding principles, multiple occurrences, Pascal Therme seeks to reintegrate the Secret Harmony of the Dream (a midsummer night's dream) through the discontinuity of the world, in a broken mirror , then redialed. This discontinuity creates a rhythm, so much so that the montages always seem to renew themselves, to wave, to breathe. A part of the Living seems inscribed there, between Apollo and Dionysos.

These montages are offered here in the form of quality prints, in various sizes.

A fragile beauty, in these precarious balances, has worked. This always experimental work was based on the tempo, the color, the blur and the sharpness, the modulation of the point of view, an interior traveling, different points of view and perspectives, seeking through the territories, to build a Unit, to approach the musical harmony of the dream in its visual correspondences. All an inspired plastic work.

These photographic paintings offer a Poetics of Space and Time recomposed, rediscovered, in dazzling colors.
