Limited edition photograph of the miniature portrait of Nelson Mandela. Portrait made in terracotta, oil paint and acrylic.

The human, a face that embodies its era, a singular expression, coming from the dawn of time, having spanned the ages. Humans, all unique, who cross our lives by the thousands and millions, loved ones, famous personalities, anonymous people that we meet in our cities... All different, each unique, and yet representing the uniqueness of Humanity. Each human, each face, each expression can reveal itself through clay, pencil, paint, film... And each of the characters becomes an actor in the living picture that Marie Serruya develops through her work. And each communicates with the viewer, questioning our heritage, our values, our world, our relationship with others. In her universe mixing emotion, humor and questioning, drawing on the Iron Age and consumer society, Marie Serruya presents us with a multifaceted work. Little masks, which seem to talk to each other, are brought to life by astonishing electronic systems. Just as inspired by Primary Arts as by the Middle Ages and cinematographic works; videos with a contemporary rhythm with an aesthetic reminiscent of Jacques Tati. In a creative, funny and impertinent way, Marie Serruya confronts us with our singularity, she alerts us to uniformity, she encourages us to express the multiple uniquenesses that allow us to make our choices, to live freely. Let us know how to laugh at ourselves, let us know how to tell our own mythologies and stories, let us know how to exist, bring our differences to life and laugh... (Hélène Poirier, author and art critic)

Marie Serruya, Magic Mandela

Presentation

Marie Serruya is a multidisciplinary artist born in 1991 to a French father and a Polish mother, both artists. She lives and works between Paris and Las Vegas.

She has developed a variety of techniques ranging from sewing to painting, including music, dance, and most notably, theater and cinema. Simultaneously, she draws inspiration from this rich world to shape her miniature portraits at the age of 13, marking the beginning of a story. This project, which she called "We are all unique and unlimited," is in perpetual gestation.

Her portraits, designed in clay, enamel, watercolor, gouache, gold leaf, bronze, video, and other media—whether minute or gigantic, static or animated—are the guiding theme of her work.

A keen observer, it is by taking a sharp look at the men and women who cross her path that she develops her unique and delightfully offbeat universe. Her work uses humour and play as her primary means of expression.

Marie Serruya was recently selected as one of the 10 international women artists for the new Venice Biennale pavilion dedicated to NFTs. She has been recognized for the quality of her work by UNESCO, which invited her last May to share her point of view during a conference titled: "Art & Human Dignity: Human Rights and Healing Arts in the Service of a Culture of Peace."

Her work has been shown in galleries in France, Spain, Australia, in fairs and in private collections in Europe, USA, Australia, and Emirates.
