Julio Le Parc was born in Argentina in 1928 and arrived in France in 1958 on a study grant. He settled in Paris, where he still resides today. Quickly influenced by the artists he met upon his arrival, he shifted from figurative painting towards geometric abstraction and the development of perceptual sculptures. Movement, light, and color became the core elements of his artistic exploration.
In the early 1960s, he co-founded the G.R.A.V. (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel) with François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Horacio Garcia Rossi, and Yvaral. This was a period of collaborative experimentation and exchange, during which "kinetic art" emerged. For the group, the viewer was not to be considered a passive recipient of artwork created by the "all-powerful" figure of the artist but was instead to interact with it.
Julio Le Parc’s first solo exhibition took place in 1966 in New York, and that same year, he won the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale. He then became a leading figure at the Galerie Denise René.
His active involvement in the 1968 protests and the production of politically charged posters led to his expulsion from France. A support committee, formed by various artists and intellectuals, enabled his return a few months later. His international acclaim grew during this period, culminating in his participation in Erre, Variations Labyrinthiques at the Centre Pompidou Metz in 2011 and the major retrospective dedicated to him by the Palais de Tokyo in 2013.
