Biografie
Tatjana Jermolajeva, known professionally as Tana Jerm (b. 1966, Latvia), is a contemporary Latvian artist and artistic researcher whose practice explores the expressive possibilities of matter, texture, and surface. Her work develops at the intersection of painting, material experimentation, and visual research, where technical knowledge and intuition become inseparable.
Rather than limiting herself to a single medium or process, Tana Jerm investigates relationships between color, transparency, density, layering, gesture, and relief. Through continuous experimentation, she constructs complex surfaces in which materials become active elements of the composition.
Texture lies at the heart of her artistic language. Layers accumulate, intersect, reveal, and conceal one another, creating depth and a physical presence that subtly changes according to light, distance, and viewing angle.
Her approach as an artistic researcher is fundamental to this process. Each artwork becomes a field of investigation—a space to observe material behavior, test possibilities, and discover unexpected visual relationships. Technical control is balanced by intuition and spontaneity, allowing experimentation to remain visible within the finished work.
At the center of her practice is transformation: the moment when color, matter, texture, and gesture merge into a unified visual experience. Created individually by hand, her works invite close observation and reveal tactile details that unfold gradually.
Through this dialogue between research and intuition, Tana Jerm has developed a distinctive contemporary language characterized by tactile richness, material sensitivity, depth, and presence.
Tatjana Jermolajeva (Tana Jerm) is represented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Latvia.
