Biografie

Juan Fernández González (born 1950 in Ayamonte, Huelva) is a figurative painter in a realist style. Drawn to drawing and colour from an early age, he painted his first oil at fourteen and continued as a self-taught painter, winning prizes in competitions that encouraged him to carry on. He held his first solo exhibitions at the Parador de Turismo in Ayamonte and in Huelva galleries, and in the mid-1970s Madrid galleries such as Kreisler, Héller and Gavar began to show his work. He then moved to Madrid and graduated in Fine Arts, specialising in printmaking, from the Complutense University. He taught for 12 years at the Taller del Prado in Madrid before dedicating himself fully to painting. Since 1980 he has lived and worked in a studio-home in the heart of Madrid, shared with a studio in his hometown of Ayamonte. Forged in the figurative tradition, he finds his subjects in careful observation of the world around him, and his paintings of water, reflections, fountains and urban landscapes convey a close realism with a subjective dimension; careful brushwork and rigorous drawing define his style, in which light and colour are fundamental. He has held more than 80 solo exhibitions in galleries in Spain and abroad and has taken part in more than 500 group exhibitions, including competitions and art fairs. He has won more than 25 national and international painting prizes. His work is in museums, official bodies and private collections, and he has an extensive bibliography in dictionaries, encyclopaedias, art magazines and the press.
