French contemporary art galleries

From independent galleries to the big names in the art scene, France is a country in which art is ingrained into its very fibres. Having produced some of the icons in contemporary art ranging from Matisse to JR and all the others in between, it is no surprise that French galleries are both numerous and varied! In the capital, you will find the big players in the contemporary art scene such as The Pompidou Centre, Musée d'Orsay, The Louvre, The Grand Palais… These need no introduction and they draw in visitors from across the globe who come, not only to see their staggering permanent collections and exhibitions, but equally to witness exclusive fashion or music events! Also in the artistic hotbed that is the city of Paris, you need only wander the weaving streets of the arrondissements and you will find a plethora of fantastic independent galleries. Take for example, Galerie Perrotin, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (housing works from the likes of Irving Penn), or Fluctuart (the first floating art space in the world, with works from Banksy and Invader). However, if you fancy indulging in the golden sunlight of the South which has inspired so many artists over the years, there are also numerous galleries dotted along the southern coast! Musée Matisse in Nice, The Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence or The Mucem in Marseille…. With such a rich picking, you are spoilt for choice! Discover our collection of French galleries on Artsper!
