Presentation

Jimmy Katz led an extraordinary life, starting out as one of the first professional ski mountaineers in the 1970s to becoming the most famous jazz photographer of all time. As NPR points out: “How do you know you've made it in jazz? When Jimmy Katz takes your picture! »

His love for music is contagious and is fully reflected in his photographs. I appreciate his enthusiasm for his subjects, his deep knowledge of them, and his connection to the jazz community. All this adds an extra dimension to his portraits.

Jimmy Katz approaches photography like a jazz musician approaches his music: with a pre-established structure but also an openness to the unexpected and spontaneity. As in jazz, his takes are both calculated and spontaneous – a difficult balance to achieve but one at which Jimmy Katz excels.
