Marie Vandooren

NANTES From May 26, 2026 to June 13, 2026

Presentation

Meet the artist on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

Marie Vandooren's paintings seem to emerge from places we pass through without truly noticing them. Transformed, constructed, exploited landscapes, where forms of silence nevertheless persist. A wasteland, a roadside, discreet architecture, a plot of land left untouched: her work observes these in-between spaces where the contemporary world reveals its most fragile traces.

Using analog photography, the artist composes images where the mediums converse and shift. Known for her screen prints—several of which recently joined the collection of the Johalla Projects Foundation in Chicago after being discovered on the gallery's website—Marie Vandooren opens a new phase of her work here with a new series of paintings.

Painting allows her to approach these landscapes inhabited by human activity in a different way. The surfaces become slower, more porous. Matter absorbs light, revealing erasures, vibrations, and areas of uncertainty. Something surfaces, poised between memory and disappearance. Without seeking the spectacular, her works shift our gaze toward what discreetly persists around us: the repeated forms of land development, the marks left by our activities, the way in which humankind transforms the landscape, sometimes rendering it almost unreal.

In this first exhibition of paintings at the Gaïa Gallery, Marie Vandooren clearly affirms the sensitivity and depth of this new pictorial territory.
