Biography

Rakhmet Redzepov, also known as Ramzi, is a Latvia-based painter born in 1954 whose career spans more than five decades. His extensive and diverse body of original work encompasses portraiture, the human figure, landscapes, maritime subjects, urban views, floral compositions and experimental painting.

At the centre of Redzepov’s practice is a sustained exploration of humanity, nature, light and emotion. His portraits and figurative works examine character, presence and the inner life of the individual, while his landscapes and maritime paintings reveal a profound sensitivity to atmosphere, movement, seasonal transformation and changing light.

Latvia and the Baltic region occupy a distinctive place within his artistic identity. Riga streets, harbours, sailing boats, birch forests, coastlines and the Baltic Sea recur throughout his oeuvre, forming a visual language in which direct observation, personal memory and emotion continuously intersect.

A highly versatile artist, Redzepov moves naturally between realism, impressionistic observation, expressive painting and contemporary experimentation. His practice includes oil, acrylic, pastel, drawing and mixed media, reflecting both extensive technical experience and an enduring curiosity about new forms of artistic expression.

Throughout his career, Redzepov has developed an international artistic presence through exhibitions and cultural activities in Riga, Moscow, St. Petersburg, London, Helsinki and Cologne. He has also conducted masterclasses in Latvia and Finland. His works are held in private collections throughout Europe and internationally.

The significance of Redzepov’s practice lies not only in the breadth of his production but also in its remarkable continuity. Across successive decades, painting has remained his primary means of observing, interpreting and transforming the world around him. Human figures, intimate portraits, Baltic landscapes, maritime horizons, cities and flowers serve as recurring witnesses to the different periods of a long artistic life.

Teaching and artistic transmission have also played an important role in his career. Through direct observation, working from life and an emphasis on creative freedom, Redzepov has shared his technical knowledge and artistic experience with younger generations, extending his influence beyond his own body of work.

Rather than being defined by a single movement, medium or subject, Redzepov’s artistic identity emerges through the dialogue between the human and the natural, intimacy and vastness, tradition and experimentation, reality and emotion.

Today, after more than five decades devoted to art, Rakhmet Redzepov remains an active painter with an extensive body of original work and a long-established artistic presence in Latvia and internationally. His oeuvre forms a visual chronicle of a lifetime dedicated to observing, feeling and transforming the world through art—a living artistic legacy that continues to evolve with each new work.

Rakhmet Redzepov is represented internationally by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Latvia.
