Biography

Burhan Karkutli was a Syrian-Palestinian artist whose work explored Palestinian identity, displacement, resistance, and everyday social life. Working primarily with drawing, ink, illustration, and graphic design, he developed a distinctive figurative language that brought together workers, families, women, and freedom fighters. His practice connected art with political engagement, using accessible imagery to preserve collective memory and communicate ideas of liberation and national identity.

Born in Damascus in 1932, Karkutli studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo and later continued his studies in Madrid and Berlin. He worked as a journalist, caricaturist, graphic designer, and teacher before becoming a full-time artist in Bonn. A founding member of the Palestinian Artist Federation in Beirut, he exhibited widely and became particularly known for his political posters and illustrations. Karkutli lived and worked in Bonn, Germany, until his death in 2003.
