Biography
JOHN CAGGIANO (1949 - ): John Caggiano is an American painter known for his colorful plein-air landscapes, coastal scenes, maritime subjects, and architectural views rendered in an Impressionistic-Realism style. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he studied pre-engineering at Brooklyn Technical High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Brooklyn College and a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, both with honors. He also pursued additional artistic studies at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Studio and Forum of Stage Design in New York City. In 1980, Caggiano moved to Rockport, Massachusetts, drawn by the distinctive light and natural beauty of Cape Ann. Working primarily in oil, he paints outdoors throughout the United States and abroad, emphasizing the interplay of light, color, and shadow to capture the atmosphere of a particular place and moment. His expressive brushwork is often enhanced by the use of a palette knife, giving his paintings a bold, dynamic quality. Caggiano has served as president of the Rockport Art Association and Museum and has been an active member of numerous professional art organizations, including the American Impressionist Society and the American Society of Marine Artists. His work has received numerous awards at juried exhibitions and plein-air competitions and has been featured in art publications, books, and television programs. Since 1981, he has maintained a gallery and studio on Bearskin Neck in Rockport, Massachusetts, where the region's coastal scenery continues to inform his artistic practice.
