Description
This abstract work, with its rich array of deep blues and vibrant greens, immediately captures the viewer's attention. Human forms emerge from the meanders of the canvas, evoking mystery and introspection. On the left, a dark figure appears to be leaning, surrounded by fluid brushstrokes that infuse movement and emotion. On the right, a silhouette detaches itself from the enigmatic background, reinforcing an intriguing juxtaposition of presence and absence. Touches of white and light blue illuminate the composition, creating dynamic contrasts and striking visual depth. The nuances blend, forming a harmonious dialogue between shadow and light. This painting, through its texture and bold palette, offers an immersive experience, oscillating between reality and abstraction, and prompts the viewer to introspective reflection on hidden identities and emotions. Each brushstroke seems to carry a hidden meaning, inviting continued exploration.
Presentation
Sara Benninga is a contemporary artist based in Jerusalem. Her work explores the complex relationship between the figure and its environment, informed by a reflection on strangeness, fragmentation, and social dynamics. Through dense, layered pictorial compositions, she questions how bodies coexist, look at each other, or simply seem to cross paths.
Using a variety of media—charcoal, dry pastel, acrylic, and oil—she deconstructs traditional narratives of representation and questions the legacies of art history, particularly in its depictions of gender and human relationships. Her works, often inspired by real people in her life, deliberately leave room for ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
Between tension and balance, Sara Benninga's work offers a profoundly sensitive painting, both intimate and universal, where fragmentation becomes a possible space for dialogue and connection.
