Presentation
DOUGLAS RICKS (1954 - 2003): Douglas Ricks was an American artist from Idaho, celebrated for his softly colored, realistic landscapes of the Teton Mountains and the American West. Born in Logan, Utah, he moved with his family to Rexburg, Idaho, as a child, where his family's deep historical ties to the region helped shape his connection to the Western landscape. His father was a respected commercial artist who organized summer workshops featuring accomplished painters, including Sergei Bongart. Ricks began pursuing art seriously shortly before his eighteenth birthday, studying under his father and Bongart before attending Ricks College in Rexburg. After two semesters, he left college to pursue his own artistic development. A two-year period of volunteer service for the Mormon Church in New York City beginning in 1973 proved influential, as visits to museums exposed him to a wide range of artistic styles and techniques. Returning to Idaho in 1975, he devoted himself to painting full-time. Working in oil, acrylic, and gouache, Ricks developed a distinctive style characterized by delicate color, atmospheric light, and carefully observed natural scenery. His paintings often combined recognizable Western landscapes with imaginative elements, including Native American figures and scenes that reflected his personal vision of an idealized West. His work remains associated with the landscapes and cultural imagery of Idaho and the Tetons.
