Description
To create this portrait, Karine Wagener was inspired by a photograph as she often does. What particularly seduced her here is the singular gaze of this young woman, both troubling and enigmatic, which seems to directly address the viewer.
This work is created in oil painting, the artist's preferred medium, which she particularly favors for the richness and sensuality of the material. Its slow drying time offers her a great freedom of work, allowing her to return to the details, to melt the colors, to work in the light.
The bright green background highlights the warm tones of the hair and the paleness of the complexion, while the close framing reinforces the character's presence.
The artist took particular pleasure in working the mouth, the part of the face she most likes to paint. The softness of the features contrasts with the intensity of the gaze, creating a certain ambiguity in the expression of the face.
Between softness and mystery, this portrait invites the viewer to imagine what is hidden behind this elusive gaze. The artist likes to cultivate a part of mystery in her canvases, inviting the viewer to imagine what is hidden behind the work and to invent its story.
Presentation
Karine Wagener is a painter born in Paris where she lives and works in her studio.
Fascinated by painting and drawing since childhood, she has always held a brush or a pencil in her hand.
After studies in Law and then languages, she moves to live between Milan and the French Riviera where she works in fashion then in event management.
But art remains an obsession.
Years later she reestablishes herself in Paris where she attends painting and drawing classes for 7 years at the Beaux-Arts ateliers of Paris.
Since then, she transcribes on canvas or paper subjects not as they are but as she sees them: full of optimism. This is translated by bright colors for the joyful emotion they bring, but also by femininity in what she finds sensual.
Her vision was shaped from childhood by the still lifes of the 17th-century Dutch School, but also by a certain pop culture mixing comic strips and American cinema of the 1950s and 60s, whose colors, settings, costumes, and music still fascinate her.
She sublimates the world around her in her daily life. Something banal in which she can detect an elegance that triggers in her the nostalgic emotion of an era she has not known. The desire to reinterpret it, giving it life, joy. This banal then becomes a subject in itself, a unique point of interest.
She wants her painting like a shot of Vitamin D that the sun provides, like an invitation to slow down and smile. To feel good, reassured by an ode to femininity, beauty, and joy in a very gray world, but that she will tirelessly insist on seeing as a movie…
In Technicolor!
Karine Wagener sells in Europe and the rest of the world where her works are part of private collections.
