Description
Bold black lines define this striking woodblock print from Takahiro Oyama's Full-length mirror series, in which the flamboyance of drag culture meets the spiritual and cultural traditions of Japan. A commanding figure emerges against a stark white background, adorned with elaborate, swirling patterns that evoke the expressive language of traditional Japanese performing arts. The flowing contours and rhythmic folds of the costume lend the composition both movement and dignity, while a vivid blue seal provides a subtle accent of traditional printmaking.
Inspired by Shikō Munakata, the celebrated Japanese woodblock print artist from Oyama's native Tohoku region, the series draws on the expressive power of Japanese printmaking to explore questions of identity, transformation, and representation.
Across his practice, Oyama brings together the striking presence of drag queens and the iconography of Buddhist statuary, challenging the boundaries between the sacred and the profane, beauty and ugliness, and tradition and contemporary culture. In Full-length mirror, these seemingly contrasting worlds converge in a powerful image that is at once theatrical and contemplative, rooted in cultural memory yet unmistakably contemporary.
Presentation

In recent years, using drag queens as motifs, they have created wood sculptures and woodblock prints by researching and referencing folklore and traditional performing arts from their hometown, the Tohoku region, to reconstruct these images. Their work portrays the human figure, embodying contradictory beauty and paradox. Major activities include ART FAIR GINZA in 2023 and the solo exhibition 'The Eight Million Faces' (tagboart gallery) in 2024. Major awards include the Contemporary Art Award at the Iwate Art Festival Art Exhibition in 2021 and the Jury Special Award at Independent Tokyo 2022.
