Description
The concave areas were inspired by the idea of water. I wanted to create an impression of fluidity by softening the edges as they extended away from the centre. And consequently, the form possesses a quality of reflected symmetry. Of course, this symmetry is not precise as the overall form is asymmetrical in nature.
The piece was conceived during a week-long course I was teaching, and I carved the yellow cedar piece in class to demonstrate the process of sculpting with hand tools. The limited time was insufficient to actually finish the piece during the course, and so the fine-tuning of the shape and the final sanding was done in the studio. I applied a hard white wax for extra lightness in colour and for a touch of sheen. The surface exhibits medium-coarse sanding marks for the enhanced absorbency of the wax (for a thicker coat) which provides character, as can be seen upon close viewing.
As I sit here viewing the piece as I write, it comes to mind that the vertical format of this freestanding, tabletop piece, coupled with the aforementioned element of fluid symmetry seemingly emanating outwards from the centre, gives the piece a sense of floating or defiance of gravity. And this is a welcome impression of the sculpture as its primary rationale is as a conceptual abstraction.
Placement, Care and Shipping:
The freestanding piece can be placed in any chosen place, either in visual interaction with another object or with plenty of space around it. There is not any specific lighting arrangement recommended for this piece as the shallow recesses will produce the soft shadows so integral to the concept of the piece under most usual arrangements. The piece is signed on the bottom including the year of creation. Dust with a soft cloth and keep a reasonable distance from heat sources. Ships in a well protected box.
Presentation
Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
