JonOne is an American street artist influenced by hip hop and the street, as well as by the codes of modern painting.

Dominican-born graffiti artist and painter John Andrew Perello, aka JonOne, was born in New York in the 1960s. Growing up in Harlem, JonOne began tagging trains and walls in his neighborhood at the age of seventeen. Self-taught, he moved on from urban supports to canvas, a medium on which he exhibited all over the world. His works are clearly influenced by his personal experience, marked by hip hop, the street and the metro, as well as by the codes of modern painting.

His innovative style transcends the laws dictated by graffiti, street art and urban culture, creating “freestyle" works with no limits. The freedom he advocates above all else is his only watchword.

After settling in Paris in 1987 and working with artists of all stripes (Speedy Graphito, LAII, etc.), he began a new conquest: that of the canvas.

JonOne is an urban artist of color who creates freestyle works of art.

In his graffiti paintings, space is fully utilized; there is no such thing as a white void. Color is John's lifeblood, his palette rich and vivid, tones and contrasts revealing subtle nuances. In a harmonious composition that appears as spontaneous as it is measured, shapes knot and untie, undulate or become straight. His toilent work combines all contrasts: symmetry and asymmetry, repetition and unification, precision and suppleness. Each of his works is a joyful, abstract improvisation.

In a very short space of time, JonOne made a name for himself in Parisian art circles, winning over critics and collectors alike. Today, the artist's popularity is evident from his presence in major galleries.

Presentation

JonOne, born John Andrew Perello in 1963 in New York, is a world-famous graffiti artist and painter of Dominican descent. Known for his innovative approach to street art, JonOne began his artistic journey at 17, graffitiing the streets of Harlem. His distinctive style challenges the traditional "rules" of urban art, embodying the concept of "freestyle," which allows him to create without limits.

Growing up in the vibrant neighborhood of Harlem, JonOne's work was deeply influenced by hip hop culture, street life, and the underground scene. His art often incorporates elements from the metro and cityscapes, creating a unique fusion of urban experience and contemporary art.

A self-taught artist, JonOne transitioned from graffiti to canvas painting after relocating to Paris in 1987. There, he immersed himself in the Parisian art world, collaborating with renowned artists like Speedy Graphito and LAII. His move to Paris marked the beginning of his international career, quickly earning him recognition in both the street art and contemporary art scenes.

JonOne's graffiti-inspired paintings are characterized by dynamic compositions where color takes center stage. His vibrant palettes and intricate use of tones and contrasts convey both spontaneity and precision. Whether through curvy or straight lines, symmetrical or asymmetrical designs, JonOne's works blend improvisation with meticulous design. The result is abstract art that bursts with life, inviting viewers to engage with the fluidity and energy of his strokes.

Beyond the gallery world, JonOne's art has transcended into high-end brand collaborations. The artist has worked with prestigious brands such as Lacoste, Hennessy, Air France, and Perrier, among others, cementing his influence in both the art and fashion worlds.

In 2023, JonOne showcased his latest solo exhibition, The World of Tomorrow, at the Musée du Touquet, further solidifying his reputation as a pioneer in the global art scene.
