Behold Mount Shasta, where it stands, imperial amid the lower heights, and, like a mighty spirit, passionless, companionless and cold. The storms of Heaven may smite it in anger, but still it stands in immaculate grandeur; and from the billowing mists rises its tower of pride, purer than before. Winter showers and white-winged tempests leave their icy tributes upon its brow, and it makes them an everlasting crown. Thus, day after day and age after age, it defies every stroke of time: ever higher in Heaven! Aspiring to the cloudless height of the eagle, no human foot has defiled its snowy flank; no human breath has dimmed the icy mirror which it holds up to the moon, the stars, and the sovereign sun. We cannot acquaint ourselves with the secrets of its hoary summit, on which the Genius of this mountain builds his glorious throne! Far in the infinite blue, he encompasses, with his supreme gaze, the vast territories of the West that stretch beneath his feet, in pictures of sublime repose that no artist has ever painted. He sees the high gigantic hills rise in silence and peace, and, in the distance, align themselves with grandeur. He sees the sun play on the golden streams that glide through the valleys. He hears the music of the immense and solemn sea, and overlooks the immense and old western wall to contemplate the cradle of the eternal Melody!
