"My work explores love, desire, faith, and self-realization. In my work, nature—through animals, birds, human figures, and fruit—becomes a language to express complex emotions and connections. Sometimes, these figures are suspended in white spaces, suggesting a sense of weightlessness or transcendence.
I blend human and non-human elements to explore the coexistence of multiple desires within a single entity. These hybrid beings embody the complexity of life, illustrating different drives and instincts. They are often depicted in intimate and intense interactions, exploring their desires through the act of love, seeking to understand their own bodies and minds.
In my work, the act of desire is not just a physical matter; it is a force that compels the characters to embrace their inner selves. The physical relationship between the characters represents a transformative moment where desire leads to self-realization…
Rather than being separate from us, nature becomes an integral part of self-exploration.
I treat fruits and vegetables as if they were human bodies. The details of their skin, the shadows that define their contours, reflect my fascination with the superficial and internal realms of existence. Sometimes I depict them in their entire form, and other times I section them, delving into their inner complexities—searching for parallels with our own physical and emotional worlds.
My work serves as a meditation on the interconnections between nature, desire, and self-discovery, all of which reflect on the complexity of existence and the deep, often unspoken, connections that unite all living beings" - Avishek Sen, March 2025.
Born in 1975 in Bengal, Avishek Sen graduated from the Santiniketan School of Fine Arts, about a hundred kilometers from Calcutta. He lives and works in New Delhi.
Through his highly suggestive and sensual watercolours, Avishek Sen has always sought to highlight and reframe the conversation between man and nature. Sen's astonishing rapprochements between animal and plant, animal and man, man and animal, are reminiscent of metaphors for man's endless thirst for domination over nature. It is no surprise that his spectacular images have become veritable replicas of our strange times.
Sen's work is full of layers and references. He often alludes to the convergence of politics and faith. These references are often obscure and serve as a support for the visual, which takes pride of place in his creations. But they also allow one to look at and rediscover the work several times. The language of fruits and flowers, traditionally rendered in the form of still life, is completely transformed in this elaborate dreamscape.
Just as he constructs the painting with layers of paint, applied thinly and repeatedly, Sen constructs the mythology and story told by the painting.
Sen's works have been exhibited at Galerie Arnaud Lebecq in Paris, Galerie Espace and Galerie Apparao in New Delhi, Galerie Aicon, New York, Galerie Albion, London, Galerie CIMA, Kolkata, to name a few. In addition, Avishek Sen has participated in numerous art fairs such as India Art Fair, Abu Dhabi Art Fair, Scope New York and Art Singapore. In 2018, Sen's works were included in the collection of FRAC de la Réunion. In 2007, he undertook an artist residency at Point Ephémère in Paris. In 2000, he received the National Fellowship awarded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
