Yang Jiechang began his Hundred Layers of Ink series in 1988, a series that would last for about a decade. Proceeding by applying and overlaying successive layers of black ink on Xuan paper, the works materialize dense, stratified monochromes with subtle variations of light according to the paper's absorption and reflection qualities, and according to the densities of ink layers superimposition. The artist is driven by the profound conviction that a "traditional expression" does not depend on a fixed form but is rather generated by daily actions that evolve infinitely. Over the past thirty years, "Reality is formless" seems to be the leitmotif at work in his creations, whether they are drawings, ink paintings, videos, actions, sculptures, or installations.

Yang Jiechang's work is far from a naive contemplation of the manifestations of life because the artist never hesitates to materially and formally rub his works against the signs of politics, the taboos of the body, eroticism, or death. Without any didactic, militant, or voyeuristic intent, Yang Jiechang's works point out both the aberrations and the creative potentials of our collective life systems, both in the East and the West. - Larys Frogier, catalog of the exhibition Yang Jiechang - On Ascension, Jeanne Bucher Jaeger gallery, 2009
