Presentation

Hugo Villaspasa lives and works in Marseille, after having trained successively at the Fine Arts of Tourcoing and Athens. A painter by training, he also very often practices printmaking: die-cut engraving and lithography. His abstract painting is interested in the strength of colors, shapes, transparencies, material, patterns, support (he most often paints on scraps of raw fabric).

His influences range from the Supports/Surfaces movement, to the Fauves and particularly Henri Matisse, including the German Expressionists.

His graphic and artistic reflection focuses on what painting intrinsically is as an object and less as a purpose, how the creative process is constructed, deconstructed, and how the painting challenges the viewer. He proceeds to expose the pictorial elements. Here we can speak of “painting for painting lovers".

Hugo Villaspasa composes the Club Forme Couleur with Inès Willaume with whom he presented the exhibition “Surface de Réparation" at Vector (Charleroi, Belgium) in spring 2019. Then, he offered “Lucarne", his first personal exhibition at the Musée de la Piscine de Roubaix (2019/2020) where a series of works on paper were presented. He has since exhibited at the Institut Français Center Saint-Louis in Rome and is preparing a new solo exhibition in Belgium for 2023.
