Presentation

Bettina Sellmann (1971, Munich/Germany) studied and graduated (Master) at Städelschule Frankfurt, Germany. From 1999 until 2009 she lived in New York City. She currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

In her work Bettina Sellmann early on developed a unique watercolor-on-canvas technique in an arabesque-like style, ranging in palette from “multi-layers of translucent pigments in pale pinks, powder blues, and acidic yellows and greens” to “candy-colored acrylic tones”.

The pink and purple tones of Sellmann’s recent paintings re-enforce the tendency in her work to integrate the – still taboo – girlish and kitschy into her painting style. In doing this, she allows the material to develop its own potential to carry her paintings to a place where they become unusual and challenging.

Bettina Sellmann has shown her work internationally. Paintings of hers are part of private and public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
