Presentation

Rui Moreira inherited from Portugal, a country of navigators and explorers, the taste for distant expeditions -- from India, to the southern Moroccan desert, to the Amazon forest -- primary sources of inspiration for his creations . On more than 12 occasions, the artist traveled to the Moroccan desert where the luminosity and the overwhelming heat inspired him, as did the labyrinthine meanders of oriental cities. Other distant journeys made him feel the icy temperatures of the mountains at the source of the Ganges, the almost absolute solitude and silence of the desert, the extreme humidity of the Amazon jungle. Drawing uninterruptedly upon his return from his trip, the artist carries out a sort of mnemonic exercise, reliving with his body and in a totally instinctive way, the natural cycle of these places and sensations.

This intense feeling is at the heart of the very structure of Rui Moreira's drawings, the dense and particular atmosphere of each of these destinations shines through in his work. The geometric abstractions summoning the detail of the infinitely small to the amplitude of a cosmography, the organic landscapes mixing the desert dunes with the Himalayan mountains, the Amazonian ferns, as well as the deities against the backdrop of a mythological landscape integrating Katakali dance motifs or the costumes of the Caretos de Podence from the Tras-os-Montes region, in the north of Portugal.

Rui Moreira's drawings also draw on cinematic references such as Tarkovsky, Hitchcock, Herzog, Syberberg and Kubrick; from musical references like Bach, Stockhausen, to traditional music; or even striking artistic references such as a fresco by Piero della Francesca. The originality and depth of Rui Moreira's work are striking. The monumentality of the whole is built in its tiny detail and its delicacy.

The artist experiences each of his drawings as a field of exploration where he uses his body like an immense machine to make his drawings, taking between 4 months and 8 months to complete them.

In 2015, Rui Moreira's work entered the prestigious Contemporary Art Collection of Société Générale. In 2018, Japanese curator Yuko Hasegawa presented the works of Rui Moreira during the exhibition Saudade Unmemorable Place in Time -- China-Portugal Contemporary Art at the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai. During 2019, the gallery presents a selection of works by the Portuguese artist on the walls of the BHV Marais Observatory during the exhibition Under the Portuguese Sun. Rui Moreira is preparing a major personal exhibition at MAAT -- Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon for 2025. This exhibition will travel to other institutions.
