Remembered for its ambitious irreverence, playfulness, and staunch anti-establishment manifesto, the Fluxus collective came together in the 1960s in the United States. The artists who spearheaded the inception of this unconventional, interdisciplinary group felt that the accessibility of art had been lost to a growing sense of elitism in the community. Thus the Fluxus collective sought to blur the perceived boundaries between art and everyday life.
Famed artists such as Yoko Ono, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys and Mary Bauermeister made substantial contributions to the Fluxus group, often through large-scale conceptual and experimental art performances. The compositional style of Fluxus work often harked to the movements such as Dadaism, Pop-Art and Eastern Asian art, a variety which testified to the diversity of artistic competences and styles within the collective. What galvanized the efforts of the group, however, was a shared philosophy of artistic democracy, enjoyment in creation, and performativity.
