Biografía
Nacido en Bergisch-Gladbach, Alemania, Uwe Ommer estuvo fascinado por la fotografía desde muy joven. Inicialmente interesado en la fotografía de aves , recibió su primera cámara a los 14 años y comenzó con un equipo limitado. A los 18 años, perdió el interés por las aves, pero mejoró sus habilidades como fotógrafo. Trabajó como aprendiz en una tienda de cámaras, trabajando paralelamente para periódicos locales, cubriendo todo, desde accidentes de tráfico hasta bodas, cuando los fotógrafos habituales no estaban disponibles.
En 1962, Ommer recibió el primer Deutscher Jugend Photo Preis (Premio Alemán de Fotografía Juvenil) en Photokina 1962 por su fotografía de niños jugando al fútbol. Al año siguiente se fue a París (sólo por un año para aprender francés) y comenzó a trabajar como asistente del fotógrafo publicitario Jean Pierre Ronzel. Aunque Ommer perfeccionó su francés, nunca abandonó París.
En 1966 abrió su propio estudio de fotografía, trabajando principalmente en moda y publicidad para pequeñas revistas femeninas. Poco a poco, Ommer fue ganando respeto por su trabajo en París, comenzó a exponer en galerías locales y publicó su primer libro.
En 1995, Ommer cambió radicalmente de dirección y decidió embarcarse en un proyecto diferente a todo lo que había hecho antes: un proyecto diferente a todo lo que nadie había hecho antes. Como reto personal, al año siguiente exhibió un documental que enumeraba todos los tipos de familias que vivían en cada continente a finales del milenio. Equipado con un Land Rover, una cámara Rolleiflex, un estudio portátil, un asistente y una multitud de mapas de carreteras y otras guías, Ommer visitó 130 países durante los siguientes cuatro años, entrevistando y fotografiando a más de 1.000 familias. Taschen publicó el catálogo "1000 Familias" en el año 2000, tras la presentación de las fotografías al público en Colonia, Alemania, en septiembre, durante Photokina 2000. Desde entonces, la exposición ha recorrido todo el mundo y ha recibido elogios por el alcance y la belleza de las fotografías y su sencillo mensaje de comunidad.
En 2002, Uwe Ommer fue nombrado miembro honorario de la Royal Photographic Society por el impacto de su trabajo.
