Abstracción gestual
La expresión abstracción gestual se refiere a una forma de hacer arte, no a lo que necesariamente se pinta, sino a cómo se hace. Abandonando la aplicación de la pintura sobre una superficie de forma controlada y premeditada, los pintores gestuales aplican la pintura de forma intuitiva, física, goteando, salpicando, vertiendo, manchando o lanzándola sobre la propia superficie. Lo que importa a los pintores de abstracción gestual no es, pues, la pintura, sino la fisicidad, la honestidad, la intuición y la profunda expresión personal. Esto, a su vez, hace que el artista deje de centrarse en el tema y se vuelque en su interior en busca de inspiración. Así, el acto de pintar se convierte en el tema. Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner y Franz Kline lideraron este movimiento a partir de la década de 1940, siendo Jackson Pollock, sin duda, el más notable con sus botes de pintura agujereados, goteando por la superficie de Number 1A, 1948 (1948). Los pintores gestuales abstractos exploran sus emociones más profundas y expresan esa parte de sí mismos durante el acto físico de pintar. Pollock señalaría más tarde que no temía hacer cambios en un cuadro, porque, decía, la obra tiene vida propia. El cuadro en sí es una reliquia de la acción, es una grabación de los gestos realizados. Todavía influyen en los artistas de hoy, artistas como Caroline Vis y Sebastien Desnos (s3b desnos) hacen referencia a Pollock en sus obras, haciéndose eco de la expresión de la emoción o, de hecho, como dice Desnos, "action painting".
