Artwork location: Czech Republic

This artwork is a compelling Cubist composition, deftly blending still life with musical elements. A guitar occupies the central vertical axis, bisected to create symmetry between two contrasting scenes. To the left, a wine bottle, accompanied by a filled glass and a pipe, evokes a sense of indulgence. The right side mirrors this with a continuation of the guitar's structure, showcasing the neck and tuning pegs. The overlapping forms and fragmented planes create dynamic movement, guiding the viewer's eye between the dual aspects of leisure and music. The use of vibrant blues, pinks, and yellows adds a dreamlike quality, while the angular lines impart a sense of tension and balance. The artist masterfully captures the harmony between music and the simple pleasures of life, inviting contemplation of the interconnectedness of these worlds.

Rumen Sazdov, Cubistic Composition
Bulgaria  • 1959

Presentation

Rumen Sazdov was born in the town of Kyustendil, Bulgaria. He was influenced by the artistic environment from an early age, his mother, a well-known and awarded puppet theater director, recognized his artistic inclinations. After the art gymnasium in Sofia, he was followed by the art academy in Veliko Tarnovo, specializing in figurative painting. Rumen first visited Prague as a university student and settled here after winning the Ministry of Education's selection procedure for the art curriculum for secondary schools. The reward was the opportunity to be a drawing teacher at the Bulgarian School in Prague, where he taught for two years. Subsequently, he ran several galleries and devoted himself to free creation and often sold his paintings while still wet.

One of the important turning points in the artist's career was the moment when he was contacted by a representative of the Parisian agency *Claude Robert & Joël Millon. At that time, the owner of the agency Claude Robert characterized his painting as lyrical cubism. Several trips to Paris followed and the auction sale of dozens of paintings through the Drouot-Richelieu auction house. Thanks to the successful auction sale, he is registered in the MAYER auction catalog and in the Index of Artists on the world art market.
