Work created by BABS for the exhibition Les Bleus de St-Laz (April 24 to 27, 2025, Espace Thorigny, 75003 Paris)

This work is a unique reproduction of a graffiti made on this mythical model of Saint Lazare in 1997. The resin plates, entirely handcrafted in an artisanal manner, represent an exact reproduction at scale 1 of the original SNCF Z6400 model from a cast of the original train. Each plate has a height of approximately 118cm and a width of approximately 58cm, is made with acrylic resin applied in 3 fiber layers for optimal resistance.

Excerpt from the explanatory text provided with this work:

A REMO, one of my many aliases from back then. Like the others, I caught it on TV, this time in the movie "Remo Unarmed and Dangerous" (1985). The guy's name is Remo Williams and at the end of the movie, he walks on water!

I come with three full cans in a bag (one navy blue, one white and one orange) and some can backgrounds. All Multonas stolen from the Leclerc in Orly, one of my best-practiced plans for twenty years. I trace, I quickly fill in orange. I draw a 3D towards the bottom, it's quick and easy to do, I can't go wrong. I use a sky blue background to fill it. I tax more sky blue from KEAG to add arrows that balance everything and connect our two graffitis. I have a fuchsia background left which I use for effects taken from an EMOY graffiti. The small very light khaki flats as well as the mini touches of red surely come from the KEAG can backgrounds. I chain my outlines in navy blue and my lights in white, always on the right to remain consistent. I finish by signing on the windows, a BABS 97 above the E and a VAT tag above the M.

It's Monday, March 25, 2025. Almost thirty years later, I've just partially reproduced this panel on three handcrafted resin-cast panels for TRAIN PART ART's Les Bleus de St-LAZ project. To trace the outlines, I had to return to my technique from back then; I haven't painted like that for a long time. I was aiming for a kind of perfection.

Artwork supplied with a protective polystyrene box for easy storage and delivery, as well as the explanatory sheet written by the artist and the photo of the original graffiti created in 1997

Babs, Les bleus de St Laz Remo 1997
France  • 1975

Presentation

Babs was born in Paris in 1975. He is a French "former vandal". He discovered graffiti at the age of 11 in Vitry-sur-Seine where he starts tagging the walls. A self-taught artist, he is considered to be one of the best writers of his generation. Lettering represents the basis of his work, and he is one of the most forerunners of the French "wildstyle".

Since 1990 he has been painting with the 3HC crew. In 1992 he started painting freestyle on trains with the DSP crew, spontaneously and instinctively. Babs has produced hundreds of graffiti under different pseudonyms. These works, that are systematically being erased, are documented in photograph and videos, but due to the fact that they are illegal, it is forbidden to keep any trace of them.

Vandalism is a lifestye and Babs wrote several texts about it. He is a purist of the style, always pushing the limits of this means of expression and is active in one of the most radical areas of Parision graffiti, with the crews UV and TPK. He paints regularly with writers such as Frez, Keag, Sezam, Fuzi, Rap or Trane.

Babs explores the art of transgression and its multiple facettes. He collaborated with artists Keag and Sore at the production of their book, Pimp my bitch, in 2010. They photographed body painting performances in the Paris metro - they painted on nude feminine models. In 2009, he was invited to show in the exhibition "Graffiti Etat des lieux" at the galerie du Jour agnès b, where he painted with Keag and Sore under the name Graffeur Delight.

In 2010 he left the underground and started to paint on walls again. He collaborated with Suby, Keag, Dem 189 and Seth (Julien Malland). In 2012 he produced a series of canvases as an hommage to piet Mondrian and with his first crew, 3HC. He was invited to show at the Palais de Tokyo in the exhibition "Dans les Entrailles du Palais de Tokyo" by Hugo Vitrani an organzed by Dem 189, Lek & Sowat. He continues to write on walls in France and abroad.
