DESISLAVA STOILOVA
ALENTOURS
12 December 2020 - 23 January 2021
We walk every day surrounded by the space that contains us.
Forms within forms, we cross several degrees, from the intimacy of our "house" to its exterior. (...)
How do these elements insinuate themselves into our memory?
What geometries delimit the edges of our existence?
The work of the artist Desislava Stoilova formulates a possible answer.
Sculptures and paintings, made of glass paste, occupy the space of the Marie-Robin Gallery like clues to the surroundings that inspired their creation.
For the artist "inhabits", photographs and absorbs the surrounding world.
A rural territory where nature touches the architectures and the tools invented to cultivate it. (...)
While walking in these surroundings, materials and their textures, their capacity to bend according to an already established utility, their inevitable erosion under the passage of time and the action of atmospheric agents, constitute an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Desislava Stoilova.
From concrete to metal, from a ray to the earth, she translates fragments of reality into drawings. These refined figures will go through the stages of a complex technical process before finding a new body on a support that is both hard and fragile: glass paste.
Glass is an infinite field of research. The artist works the material beyond its possibilities, from the moulding to the final firing, towards results that are expected or unknown.
The Constructions series, for example, reflects more recent experiments in this creative flow - not yet complete - through the exploration of the circular motif, the superimposition of layers and pigments to be compressed and stretched, the repetition of knotted wefts. (...)
Desislava Stoilova illuminates the details of a landscape that are sometimes still unnoticed, she transforms them into opaque and mineral surfaces, into modular structures to be composed and recomposed by following the images of the Alentours "sheltering" our memory.
