Budapest's thermal waters have been renowned since ancient times, and the tradition of thermal baths was consolidated under Ottoman rule between 1541 and 1699. The Széchenyl Baths were built in the early 20th century. For a long time, they were frequented only by Hungarians, who came to relax playing chess or seek treatment. Today, with low-cost flights and party tourism, crowds of tourists—chattering shadows emerging from the steam—move from pool to pool, summer and winter.
