It was during a visit to Shanghai at the age of 18 that Vlad Karni glimpsed an opportunity to go beyond the borders of a desperate life in Belarus.

This first immersion in a multicultural megapolis was a turning point in Vlad's life as he experienced a new way to live, to think and to express himself and it marked the start of a long journey to find his artistic home that has taken him full circle back to this 'Pearl of the Orient. From Shanghai, Vlad visited Istanbul before returning to Belarus for graduation where he finally decided that the country of his birth was no longer a place he could call home. Driven by a desire to escape oppressive local systems and customs – and concerned by the psychological and physical harm of Belarus' mandatory 1.5 years of military service – Vlad literally fled from Belarus to St. Petersburg. From there, it was on to Moscow where he avidly explored the city's rich cultural scene, spending lots of time in its many museums and galleries of modern art. While studying the works of the great Russian artists of the 20th century, Vlad was particularly drawn to Marc Chagall for his innovative vision and sparkling humor as well as their common heritage as Belarusians. Yet, Vlad was also interested in contemporary art, impressed by the possibilities of its expressive language and its ability to influence current discourse. Today, in his works, Vlad reflects all these lived experiences along with the experience of creating the work itself. While creating art, Vlad finds himself on the verge of the conscious and unconscious, in a flow state close to a meditative trance.

"I believe that our authenticity and destiny are determined not by the conditions and place of birth, but by our path to its formation. This is an endless process and there is no proof or refutation, that death will be the end of this path. Art and music - the guides of this journey".
