Presentation
Born in 1954 in Paris, Gérard Uféras is a French photographer.
Thanks to his father, he discovered the world of photography. The latter collected cameras, encouraging young Gérard Uféras to use them at the age of 8. At the age of 12, the youngster began visiting all the Parisian museums and developed his artistic knowledge while taming his eyes.
However, the photographer turned towards a career in trade, and moved away from the artistic world. His passion didn't fade away, and at the age of 28 he decided to completely devote himself to his reflexes.
For his themes and series, Gérard Uféras draws inspiration from the artistic world, but also from fashion and sports. Disciplines where the protagonists are influenced by their profession, according to the artist.
In 1984, he began a collaboration with the newspaper, Libération and did photo-reporting and portraits for them. Those days, he was firmly settled in communication and advertising, and this brought along his first exhibitions.
A major admirer of Cartier-Bresson, Kertész and Koudelka, he falls in with them and is one of the co-founders of the VU agency. His friendship with Willy Ronis continues to nourish his inspiration and art. An intimate and graceful photographer, Gérard Uféras didn't want to live glamorously and keeps a low profile.
His work has been exhibited around the world and he benefited from the major retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, in 2009.
