David Koloane was one of South Africa's most important artists of the twentieth century and is best known for his swirling, chaotic representations of black life in the city of Johannesburg, his muse and favourite subject.
He also played an important role in the history of South African art as the mentor to numerous younger artists and as one of the founders of the first gallery in South Africa to exhibit black artists under apartheid.
