Presentation

Luis Gordillo is a Spanish artist, born Luis Rodríguez Gordillo in 1934.

Initially he studied law before changing his vocation to finally opt for a training in Fine Arts in Seville, following this he moved to Paris in 1950, where he rubbed shoulders with avant-garde leading figures.

His career cadenced with well-defined periods, he was part of the informal art movement along with other artists like Antoni Tàpies, Jean Dubuffet or even Jean Fautrier and was considered as one of the most important Spanish interpreters of pop art in the 60's.

He gradually develops an interest for psychoanalysis and incorporates the interest for these thoughtful meanings, studying the link between the world experience and aesthetic expression. One of the most unique contributions of Gordillo in contemporary art was the definition of chromatic strategies, inspired by the contemporary urban phenomena. In this sense, his work is a lot like documentary photography and popular cultures linked to graphic design.

He is one of the leading figures of abstract art in Spain, and his work has been exhibited at several personal and collective exhibitions such as the one organized at the Museum of Art in Zapotán, Mexico by the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo of Seville, but also the retrospective of his pictorial and photographic work which was dedicated to him by the National Museum of Reina Sofía in Madrid in 2007, where Gordillo himself directed the conceptual organization of the exhibition.
