Andy Warhol: Skulls
Andy Warhol's art is enduring and instantly recognizable. His contributions to the art world in pioneering the Pop Art movement made him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and generally a major personality within popular culture. His signature prints, bold colors and repeated patterns are some of the most sought after works on the market, and he continues to inspire generations of artists today.
Towards the end of his life, Warhol's work took a morbid and self-reflective turn, as seen in his series Self-Portraits, and his collection of skull artworks are no different. Beginning in 1968, Warhol produced a series of artworks featuring skulls, a traditional symbol of death, as a way to deal with his own impending mortality. This includes images of Warhol himself with skulls and prints using his recognizable contrasting color schemes.
Of note is his 1976 artwork named Skulls which featured 10 panels of the same skull image repeated with his eclectic color palette. In many ways, this work is comparable to the renaissance style memento mori which similarly reflected on the impermanence of life.
